Electro Stimulation: A Way to Enhance your Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture is based on the Chinese philosophy of qi, or the universal life force energy that runs through specific meridian channels in the body. Stimulating these energy channels and the points located on them with a gentle electrical current will alleviate certain illnesses, but is most commonly used to relieve acute and chronic pain.

How Electro-Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture needles are inserted to stimulate the points and activate qi energy in the needed areas of the body. Then, wires are attached to specific needles to send pulses of electric current through the blocked energy channels. This will create a gentle humming vibration to stimulate the points and activate qi energy. Often when pain or disease is present, there is a blockage in one or more of the meridians.  The goal with treatment is to get the energy flowing again and reverse the pain/disease. It is for the most part pain-free and can be quite soothing for some. Often patients will control how much stimulation they would like, so they can decide how intense they would like the treatment to be for the typical 20 minute time frame.

Standard treatments use 40-80 volts of electric current but in reality, no current runs through the body. All you feel is the pulsating sensation of the energy being reactivated in the meridians, not the electric current itself. As a result, chronic pain or ill health is alleviated with minimal side effects. The treatment is amplified with the used of electrostimulation and often results are achieved sooner compared to just using acupuncture needles on their own.  Electrostimulation works best for hard to treat neurological disorders, spasms, paralysis and chronic pain.

An electro-acupuncture treatment can be enhanced when combined with acupressure where a gentle massage is used to boost qi energy and blood flow. Together, they warm the stiff muscles, remove the blockage and increase circulation.

The treatment is not recommended for heart patients, pregnant women, those suffering from epilepsy or strokes. There are certain areas of the body where it must not be performed either, such as the throat, head or heart area.
